QuickDesk is a great quick-launch tool for Android

Posted by admin Comments (0)
quickdesk

There are quite a few homescreen app launchers for Android; the best-known ones, ADW and LauncherPro, are very powerful but tend to be a tad on the chunky side. When you’re in the middle of doing something and need to quickly switch to another task, you may not always like to go via your cluttered homescreen.

Enter QuickDesk: this quick utility is basically like a single homescreen page, with widget support and all. But when you launch it, it pops up as an overlay on top of what you’re doing. The screenshot to the right shows QuickDesk running on top of a browser session, for example, but you could run it from any application; all it takes is a quick double-tap of the Home button (or even a single tap, with a double-tap to launch your “regular” launcher app). Those indicators you see next to PicMe, Phone and the other apps means they’re currently running in the background.

Within QuickDesk, you get single-tap access to your most frequent applications and widgets. For example, I placed the power management widget there so I can quickly switch Wi-Fi off from any app – useful when I’m out and about, in the middle of something, and suddenly realize Wi-Fi is on and sucking battery power.

QuickDesk also features an “app drawer” of sorts, showing your most recently used applications. I personally disabled that feature (that’s why you don’t see it in the screenshot) because I feel the implementation clashes with the homescreen design – when the app drawer is open, some of the homescreen slides “up” and out of view. Still, QuickDesk is an interesting launcher, and the free version doesn’t appear crippled in any way. QR code is after the jump.

Foursquare finally adds photos, comments and check-in history

Posted by admin Comments (0)
Foursquare check-in photos, history, comments

Proving that we are well and truly ensconced by the 21st century, Foursquare has finally added photos to the check-in experience. We can only begin to imagine the technological mountains Foursquare had to scale in order to implement this much-wanted, but dauntingly-hard-to-implement feature. There’s also a brand-spanking-new first-party Foursquare iPhone app.

You can now also comment on check-ins (above right), which should make the synchronization of schedules and meet-ups easier. To make the most of both photos and comments, there is now a History page on foursquare.com, which you can visit to see all of your previous check-ins — including any photos and comments.

Foursquare has been working with its partners to make the most of the new functionality, too: Instagram and Foodspotting will both automatically create ‘photo check-ins.’

For now, the only mobile Foursquare client for Android is picplz. WebOS is coming later this week, and BlackBerry in January. Developers will get access to the new API later this week.

Democracy UK, a UK-focused political campaigning initiative by Facebook, has just released a number of mind-blowing stats on the massive usage of the network by its 500-plus million members in 2010. Over the course of the year, Facebook reports that 43,869,800 members changed their status to single, 3,025,791 changed their status to “it’s complicated”, 28,460,516 changed their status to in a relationship, 5,974,574 changed their status to engaged and 36,774,801 changes their status to married. While these numbers are impressive, Facebook’s stats on “what 20 minutes on Facebook looks like,” are even more staggering. According to Facebook, 1 million links are shared every 20 minutes on the network. Here are a few other stats listed:

HTC Thunderbolt, Samsung SCH-i520 LTE phone show up in Verizon’s system

HTC Thunderbolt in Verizon systemSamsung SCH-I520 LTE device

Verizon’s New Year’s resolution? Android LTE phones. And lookie at what just popped into its system — SKUs for the HTC Thunderbolt (aka ADR6400) and that Samsung SCH-i520 LTE device, and dummy units to go along with them. The former basically is the Desire HD with a cool kickstand and speaker underneath, with Verizon’s new 4G data. The Sammy device? We’ll just have to see what gets unearthed at CES next week, won’t we? Thanks, lk!

Huawei’s HIC tablet for Vodafone has all the beauty of an industrial-grade nav unit

Posted by admin Comments (0)

Considering the cheap plastics and giant white logos, our first thought when we saw this unflattering shot in the FCC’s filing system was that we were looking at some sort of connected navigation unit for delivery trucks — but alas, as far as we can tell, the so-called HIC is a “tablet” from Huawei that doubles as a phone for Vodafone. Besides a triband 3G radio, this hot mess gets you a 7-inch WVGA display, a front-facing camera for video calls, and an integrated kickstand around back for setting it on a countertop. The style of the power adapter leads us to believe that the HIC might be intended for permanent use in your home, which would explain why it bears so little resemblance with something we’d want to carry around — but still, couldn’t they have made it a little prettier? No word on when (or to which of Vodafone’s markets) it’ll be coming.

Epistle is a Dropbox-syncing, minimalistic text editor for Android

Posted by admin Comments (0)
epistle

I’ve got a serious text editor fetish, and as such, it extends across devices. I’ve been on the lookout for a simple text editor for Android for a while now. There’s complex software, with tagging support, SimpleNote sync and lots of other bells and whistles, and at the other end of the range there are really simple editors with no sync functionality at all.

And then I found Epistle. I’ve just started testing it, but so far I’m pretty excited about it. It’s as simple as can be, with just one extra: it supports Dropbox sync, and the sync appears to work well. You create a note on the device, and it instantly appears in a Dropbox folder called epistle right at the root of your Dropbox. Update the note on the desktop, and it’s updated on the device.

Epistle’s two main disadvantages at this point are that it doesn’t let you pick a Dropbox folder manually but just adds a folder to your Dropbox root, and that it doesn’t support right-to-left languages such as Hebrew and Arabic. Other than that, it’s a fairly strong contender in the “simple editor” category.

Ask DLS: how to change your Download Squad password, the best Android web browser, and tailoring our RSS feeds

Posted by admin Comments (0)

We’re back with more of your questions, and more of our excellent answers.

This week, with the high-profile Gawker Media hack, we’ve been innundated with commenters asking how to change their Download Squad password. Now, it’s not the easiest thing in the world, and yes, we know our commenting system isn’t the best in the world (and we know there are still a few ‘Easter eggs’ from the Switched merger; they’ll be ironed out soon, I promise) — so if you’re struggling to change your password, follow these simple steps:

  • Make sure you’re logged in – the only way to do this (at the moment) is to leave a comment on a post (any post will do!)
  • Find one of your comments — the comment you just made will work just fine
  • Click your name — it’s a link to your profile page (it will look something like this). Marvel at your huge post counts!
  • Type your old password, and confirm a new password – hit Change Password and you’re done!

The Washington Post Seems to Have Heard of this "Facebook" Site [Facebook]

Posted by admin Comments (0)

A well-designed website should be clear, above all. No flashing GIFs (we miss you, 90s!), no obnoxious flash menus, no overwhelming lists of links. And heads up, WaPo website: it shouldn’t be blanketed in insanely redundant Facebook sharing buttons. More »
