The good news is that he’s working it from a seated position, the great dream of folks tired of standing up to get their motion gaming on. The bad news is that you only get control of your arms, face, and head — you won’t be walking around and punching your friends in the face, sadly. We saw a couple of settings — sadly, not the AA-style setup we witnessed during the keynote — which are pleasant but a little generic (like most of Microsoft’s Kinect titles right now).

The actual facial tracking and body tracking worked, but the motions seemed a little minimal. Kinect is obviously completely capable of great skeletal tracking, so we’re hoping for a bit more expressiveness, but we’re still early on, so things could always be tweaked a bit before launch. We did confirm that Steve Ballmer’s Avatar appearance last night was a canned recording, so we are looking at software that isn’t ready for prime time. Overall we think Avatar Kinect is a great idea, and an excellent way to show off Kinect’s exclusive motion control prowess, we just look forward to a future where we have even more control over our Avatars — isn’t that the whole point of Kinect, after all? Emerging just a week after the high-profile Gawker Media hack, and proving it is still very fleet-footed indeed, Google search results now warn you if a website has been hacked. The notification (see screenshot above) looks just like the malware warning.

Unlike the malware warning, however, you do not get shown the ominous ‘visiting this site may harm your computer!‘ interstitial page. Rather, you are free to click through to the site as usual. Perhaps Google’s hack-detection code isn’t quite finished, or it is still fine-tuning the process. The only actual change, then, is the addition of the “This site may be compromised” link, which links to a page in the Google Help Center.

The coolest bit, though, is for the owners of websites. If you register your site with Google Webmaster Tools, Google will automatically notify you if your site has been compromised. Google has even produced a guide for cleaning up a hacked site — cool!

The most beautiful thing to come out of CES 2011? The show ain’t over yet, but we’re unafraid to say that Razer‘s Switchblade is the device to beat. Before you go getting your hopes up, we have to (regretfully) point out that this here gaming handheld is but a concept, but considering that Toshiba’s Libretto W105 made it to store shelves (if but for a moment), we’re hoping and praying that the Switchblade can also find its way to a production line. Little is known about the device itself, but Razer has imagined it using a pair of 7-inch multitouch displays as well as a layer of tactile, dynamic keys on the lower screen. Much like the Optimus Maximus of yesteryear, this keyboard would enable gamers to place different screens underneath depending on title, and even within a game, you could imagine the keys shifting to account for different POVs, levels, scenarios, etc. Internally, the concept is based around an Intel Atom processor, but there’s no word on what kind of GPU would work alongside of it. Sadly, Razer’s unwilling to talk pie-in-the-sky details when it comes to price and release, but if four million comments show up below begging and pleading for the company to take this commercial…

Sony Ericsson isn’t being shy about hyping the Xperia Arc‘s new Reality Display, so we naturally had to take a head-to-head shot with the iPhone 4′s Retina Display. They actually compare quite well in person, even though the Arc actually has the same 854 x 480 resolution as the Droid X — you can definitely see some pixels up close, but since the panel is a hair smaller than the X at 4.2 inches, the pixel density is a little tighter. The real noise behind the Reality Display is Arc’s Bravia Engine, which Sony claims will enhance colors and detail just like on Bravia TVs, but we didn’t get to play with it too much beyond finding the option in settings to turn it off. We’ll obviously be diving deep on that once we score a review unit, but for now check a macro shot and a Droid X comparison after the break.
