Robot Unicorn Attack Heavy Metal is an awesome Time Waster

Posted by admin Comments (0)
robotunicornattackheavymetal

A couple of months ago, our friends over at TUAW wrote about Robot Unicorn Attack Heavy Metal for iOS. And I’m here today to tell you this momentous game is now available as a Time Waster for the rest of us — and it’s free! In terms of gameplay, what can I say? You’re a robot unicorn and you attack while grooving to heavy metal, which is probably why the game is called Robot Unicorn Attack Heavy Metal!

To be a tad more clinical about it, the game can be described as a platformer, but each run is fairly short-lived. You launch from the left side of the screen, hitting Z to leap into the air. Once you gain a bit of speed, you can hit X to dash forward. You can also hit Z to double-jump (i.e, jump up while still airborne). With a clever combination of Z and X, you might not touch the ground for quite a while.

However, not touching the ground isn’t enough to win: the level changes, and there are cliffs and all sorts of tricky topography. Run into a wall, and you die. The goal is to continue moving for as long as possible. If you’re into heavy metal and unicorns, you owe it to yourself to try this game.

Grace Digital adds color displays on new Solo Touch, Bravado X, and Mondo WiFi radios

Posted by admin Comments (0)

Can’t say we had the best of times with Grace Digital’s Allegro, but the dawning of a new year means the dawning of a new effort. Three efforts, in this case. Poised for an official unveiling next week at CES, the outfit’s new trio of internet radios have all been upgraded with color displays. Up first is the Solo Touch, a $249.99 device with an expansive 4.3-inch touchpanel, bundled remote, Ethernet connection, RCA outputs and a headphone jack. Stepping down a notch, there’s the Bravado X ($179.99), which offers a 2.7-inch color display, RCA in / out and a USB connector. Finally, the $169.99 Mondo packs a 3.5-inch color display, a full-on alarm clock (with snooze!) and a USB port of its own. The whole lot can be controlled via a free iPhone app, and they’re each capable of tuning into iheartradio, Pandora, Sirius XM, WeatherBug, CBS Radio, MP3Tunes and more. Now, off to Vegas to see if those user interface quirks have been cleared up…

Sharp Galapagos media tablets will bring 3G and EPUB content to US e-reader market in 2011

Posted by admin Comments (0)

We like a bit of ambition around these parts and Sharp’s plans for entering the US e-reader battlefield reek of the stuff. The Galapagos tablets that recently enjoyed their Japanese debut are going to be retooled, according to the Mainichi Daily News, to include new 3G radios for the internet-addicted US consumer, while the primary content format will also be switched from the proprietary XMDF in Japan to the almost universally compatible EPUB. Content partnerships are said to be brewing as we type, because, quite naturally, Sharp intends to have its own e-bookstore for Americans as well. After the Yanks, the company’s said to be looking into bringing its 5.5- and 10.8-inch tablets to China, India, and Brazil. Highly ambitious indeed.

McAfee: Smartphones, Apple devices to be top malware targets in 2011

Posted by admin Comments (0)

Traditionally, Windows’ massive user base has made it a juicy target for malware authors, but a new report from McAfee suggests there could be a major shift in 2011. The security company is predicting that attacks on the exploding smartphone segment and Apple devices will increase significantly.

Mac trojans have already become increasingly common in 2010, and McAfee finds that “lack of user understanding of proper security for these devices, will increase the risk for data and identity exposure.” This lack of understanding, coupled with the increased presence of iOS devices in business environments, will make Apple users a prime target for malware.

The report also finds smartphone users will face increased danger in 2011. With hundreds of millions of new users purchasing more powerful phones and spending more time browsing on them, increased attention from malware authors is a natural (albeit unwelcome) side effect. If the app store for your phone offers security applications, there’s no time like the present to read some reviews and get one installed.

Apart from smartphones and Apple devices, social engineering attacks (e.g. scams via Facebook, Twitter, e-mail and social networks) will continue to be big in 2011. McAfee asserts that personal information made available via geolocation apps and privacy lapses will allow attackers to better craft their attacks on individuals. There’s also no sign of viral attacks on social sites like Facebook and Twitter slowing down, and short URL services will continue to be used to hide malicious links. Here’s hoping more URL shorteners will look into pre-scanning their links to ensure our safety.

Chicken-based camera stabilization more effective than the human head mount (video)

Posted by admin Comments (0)
As you’re undoubtedly well aware, the chicken’s vestibulo-ocular reflex and gaze stabilizing function (Google it!) is highly evolved, making it just the thing for steadying your camera. Of course, you need access to live poultry, a tiny camera, some sort of rubber band, and the patience and skill to befriend a rooster and bring him to your film shoots. You’ve already seen one loyal Engadget reader’s fledgling attempts at the Chicken Powered Steadicam[TM], but you can rest assured that this fowl gadget (groan) is constantly in development. Check out our friend Jeremiah’s video after the break to see comparison shots between a rooster cam, a handheld camera, and one just sort of strapped to Jeremiah’s head.

iPhone 4 bugs: Blue tint in center of photos

Posted by admin Comments (0)

There is a interesting bug in iPhone 4 photos where a blue tint shows up in the middle of the image. This bug has been widely noted and appears to effect only the back, 5mp camera and not the forward facing VGA camera. It also seems to still be a problem under iOS 4.2.1. [...]

KinEmote controls Boxee or XBMC via your Kinect

Posted by admin Comments (0)
The Microsoft Kinect hacks just keep on coming, and we’ll probably be seeing even more cool apps released now that first-party drivers are available for download. Today, we’ve got a glimpse at a new open source project called KinEmote in action. It’s designed to take advantage of your Kinect in its natural habitat: the living room.

KinEmote is a — you guessed it — remote control app which allows you to interact with both Boxee and XBMC from across the room. Check out the video demo after the break to get a look at what controlling your media center PC could be like with a Kinect plugged into it!
